Does it Matter What Kinds of Baby Blankets I Buy? - By Sara Crawford

Snuggling in a blanket can make anyone look cute. That's probably why the image of a darling little bambino swaddled up tight with their cute round face poking out is one of the most memorable images of newborns and infants everywhere.
Or maybe they're dozing on the blanket with their skin against the soft cotton, as peaceful as they'll ever be. Or how about the great photos with only their tiny feet poking out of the end?

All of these images are great fun to think about but not much use when it comes to deciding which type of blanket to buy. That's why when you're thinking of buying a new blanket you need to consider:

Arguably the most important factor when deciding on a blanket is what it will be used for. If you're buying a beautiful blanket for a home grown photo shoot or for special occasions, say, a christening then you might not need to worry about how difficult the material will be to clean. Chances are hopefully, the baby won't dribble or vomit in the short time the 'ceremonial' blanket is in use but in most cases it will matter if you are going to use the blanket on a day to day basis.

Cashmere blankets are beautiful, soft to the touch and made from the wool of the Cashmere goat, these blankets are luxurious, light and warm. They are the perfect blankets for a special occasions. There are strict standards governing what can be labelled as Cashmere in the US so you're guaranteed a quality blanket. But on the downside they have to be carefully hand washed at a lukewarm temperature.

Wool is another common material for a baby blanket but for some kids and adults the texture of the wool can irritate their skin, making wool a good choice for an outer layer but not as good if it's going to be against the babies skin. Wool is also very warm but needs special attention when being washed. As you'll know if you have children already, baby clothes, blankets, bibs and bedding spend nearly as much time being washed as the do being worn.

If you need to be able to throw the blanket in the washing machine or hand wash it with a bunch of other clothes then the ultimate in cleaning friendly blankets is polyester. This man made fibre material is as durable as it gets yet it's still warm and soft to the touch.

If you can afford it, it's a nice luxury to have several blankets, one for daily use and another for special occasions.
