3 Tips For Photographing Newborns By Ellen Black
Newborn babies can be some of the most fun subjects to photograph. However, these photo sessions can seem rather intimidating at times for the photographer! Working with newborns can be...
rewarding for the photographer and the parents if a few important tips are followed. These newborn photography tips will increase your chances of getting that perfect shot.
Plan Ahead:
Schedule the first newborn photo session within about 10 days of the actual birth. That precious little "newborn curl" only last until about day 10 so try to get your first photographs during this time.
The newborn photo shoot is best done when the baby is very sleepy. Talk to the mother before the actual shoot and try to plan for the newborn to be photographed at his/her sleepiest time of day.
Remind the mother to dress the baby in something that is easy to remove. The last thing you want to do is disturb the sleeping baby right before the photography session. Sometimes just a diaper and nicely wrapped blanket is the easiest to remove without disturbing the sleepy newborn.
Avoid Overload:
After scouring over hundreds of photos of newborns on the internet or photography books, your head is spinning with ideas. It is tempting to want to try all of them with the first newborn you get the chance to photograph. Avoid this trap!
While it is great to have lots of creative ideas in the back of your mind, it is very easy to set your expectations too high and then realize the baby may have other ideas! Pick two or three poses that you would like to try, and try to get some very good shots of those. Once that is accomplished, you can consider adding in another pose or two, if your cute little subject is up to it.
For newborn babies - simpler is almost always better. This brand new baby is so new and so perfect, so making them the focus of your photograph is the best idea.
Keep Your Room Warm:
The main objective with newborn photography is to keep the baby comfortable. A comfortable, cozy subject will be much more relaxed and easier for you to pose.
Many newborn shoots today are done while the baby is without clothes, so you want to make extra sure the air is warm enough. This is important during the summer months also when air conditioning may be running. A space heater can be a very useful investment. That way you are only heating the area that you will be photographing in.
A room temperature of 73 to 75 degrees is about the right temperature for the newborn. If you are taking these newborn photos in a client's home, it might be a good idea to bring your space heater and have the area warm about one hour ahead of the actual photo shoot.
Although your first few newborn photo sessions may seem awkward, the more you do the more comfortable you will become. It is so rewarding to capture those first precious days and moments with your camera. You may find these newborn photo sessions becoming your favorite type of shoot!
