Professional Baby Photography by Synthia R. Perreault

Of course, taking a portrait of a newborn is tricky at best. All those cute expressions seem to turn into cries once the camera is brought out. Unless baby is asleep,..
...having a professional portrait taken of your newborn is at least as difficult. But there are tips that will help you make this an event worth remembering.

First, plan the photographing event around your newborn's schedule. As you know, babies sleep a lot and tire easily. If you want to get the picture of baby while sleeping, plan the event during a time of the day when baby is sleepy and just fed. Since newborns aren't going to smile, it is easiest to prop the baby up and take him or her in repose, with cute toys surrounding. This may mean tweeking the schedule by keeping baby awake longer so that everything comes together at the scheduled time.

If you want baby to be to be awake for the picture, choose a photographer who is patient with babies and has time for the unscheduled interruptions such as messy pants, crying for no reason, or feeding. Some insecure babies need Mommy to be close and will cry even when Mommy is across the room. Adjust to this by being willing to get into the picture, or at least right next to baby.

Be sure they take lots of pictures! Instead of wishing you hadn't missed that cute smile, encourage them to take twenty duds so you did capture the cute smile. Fortunately, digital photography allows this at no additional cost.

Of course, newborns aren't going to pose for a picture, especially when asleep, so the photographer needs to pose the baby with props, toys, and backgrounds that are appropriate. Don't make the picture too complex. Remember, it is a picture of the baby, not a show of the creativity of the photographer. But don't neglect to check the props either. A wrinkled towel or blanket could distract. Of course, colors may be gender specific (especially blue and pink) so keep this in mind.

If the baby is going to be asleep when he arrives, be sure to dress him in clothes that are easy to get off without waking him. For example, void coats or shirts that must be pulled over the head. Mom, help the photographer with this.

If you want baby's cute feet, belly, or bare bottom in the picture, be sure the room is warm enough for the undress. The photographer should be sensitive to this but you may need to remind him. If you are getting extra skin in the picture, be sure clothing is removed early so wrinkle lines won't show. On the other hand, consider carefully before taking pictures of baby that would embarrass him or her when he gets older. Remember, this is to be a wonderful lasting memory for everyone.

Because it is rare to get a perfect pose, and at times Mommy needs to be present to keep baby calm, chose a photographer who is good at post-picture 'photoshopping.' Wonders can be done to correct flaws in photographs, remove objects or people that were unwanted, and make the picture as perfect as you imagined it would be.

Finally, don't get flustered! Your parenting skills are not on the line, nor are you there to impress the photographer with what a perfect baby you have. Just relax, and plan for the unplanned. The norm is that things will go wrong, and a professional photographer knows that. Hopefully he or she will be patient, allow for breaks and the needed care, and, in the end, you will capture the moment for a lifetime.
